Objective

To create a safe, respectful space where individuals feel empowered to express their thoughts and feelings honestly without fear of judgment or retaliation. 

Problem Statement

Many people hesitate to speak up in group or conflict situations due to anxiety about negative judgment, interruption, or backlash, leading to unresolved issues and communication breakdowns.

Solution Provided

The Talking Piece uses a tangible, physical object passed among participants to signal whose turn it is to speak. This ritual foster active listening, mutual respect, and psychological safety, encouraging honest and open dialogue.

The Science

This tool draws on principles from restorative justice and nonviolent communication, emphasizing empathy and equal voice. The use of a talking object aligns with group facilitation best practices to reduce social anxiety and improve turn-taking, fostering a culture of safety and trust.

Time Commitment

15–30 minutes (can be extended depending on group size and depth of discussion)

Facilitation Level

Light Facilitation (facilitator guides flow but participants lead their own sharing)

Materials Needed

  • A distinct physical object (the “Talking Piece”) that is easy to hold and pass around 
  • Optional: A quiet, comfortable space conducive to listening 

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool

  • Introduce the Talking Piece
    Explain the purpose: this object represents the right to speak without interruption or judgment. Only the person holding it may talk.
  • Set Ground Rules
    Clarify that while holding the Talking Piece, individuals should speak honestly and respectfully. Others listen actively and without interrupting.
  • Start the Round
    Choose who begins holding the Talking Piece. This could be by volunteer, random choice, or facilitator pick.
  • Pass and Speak
    When finished, the speaker pass the Talking Piece to the next person. Repeat until everyone who wants to speak has had a chance.
  • Optional Reflection
    At the end, invite group members to share reflections on how it felt to speak and listen in this format.
