The Peg List

Turn numbers into vivid images that stick.

The Peg List

Objective

To improve numerical recall by converting abstract numbers into memorable words and visual associations using a simple phonetic code.

Problem Statement

Remembering long numbers or data sequences can be frustrating because digits alone are abstract and difficult for the brain to retain.

Solution Provided

The Major System transforms numbers into consonant sounds, which are then turned into words and images. This conversion makes recall easier because the brain remembers meaning and imagery more effectively than plain numbers.

The Science

Based on associative and phonetic mnemonic principles, the Major System activates dual-coding – combining sound and visual imagery to strengthen long-term memory traces. Studies in cognitive psychology show that creating meaningful or bizarre imagery improves numerical retention and recall accuracy.

Time Commitment

10–15 minutes to learn; can be practiced daily in 5-minute bursts.

Facilitation Level

No Facilitation (self-learning poster or desk chart).

Materials Needed

Poster or printed chart showing the consonant-sound mapping (0–9), example conversions, and image cues.

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool

  • Study the number-to-sound chart on the poster. Each digit corresponds to a consonant sound (e.g., 1 = T/D, 2 = N, 3 = M, etc.).
  • To remember a number, translate each digit into its consonant sound, then add vowels to form a word.
    Example: 21 = N (2) + T (1) → “Net.”
  • Visualize the resulting word as a vivid, sometimes silly image related to what you need to remember.
Example: If your PIN starts with 21, imagine catching it in a “net.”
  • Use the chart regularly to create quick associations until the phonetic pattern becomes intuitive.
