Complex Span

Stretch your working memory to remember,
process, and perform in real time.

Complex Span

Objective

To train and expand working memory capacity by exercising your ability to store and manipulate information simultaneously for better focus, reasoning, and comprehension.

Problem Statement

In demanding situations, people often lose track of what they’re doing while processing new inputs. The inability to hold and update information in real time weakens decision-making, comprehension, and problem-solving efficiency.

Solution Provided

Complex Span strengthens your ability to juggle multiple mental tasks — remembering letters, words, or patterns while performing quick judgments in between. It replicates real-world cognitive load, teaching your brain to balance retention and processing effortlessly.

The Science

Grounded in Baddeley’s model of working memory, the Complex Span task is a proven cognitive training paradigm. It targets the central executive system, which coordinates short-term storage (retaining information) with processing (updating or manipulating it). Repeated use enhances both memory endurance and mental control under cognitive strain.

Time Commitment

15-20 mins.

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool

  • Start the Game:
    • Launch Complex Span
    • Letters (or simple words) will appear one by one on the screen.
  • Memorize the Sequence:
    • Focus carefully as each letter flashes.
    • Your goal is to remember them in order, while also performing quick logic or judgment tasks between flashes (e.g., deciding whether a number is even, or identifying letter colors).
  • Interference Phase:
    • Between each new letter, you’ll complete a small distractor task — forcing you to hold the sequence in your mind while processing new information.
  • Recall Phase:
    • After the sequence ends, reproduce the letters in the exact order shown.
    • As you progress, the number of letters increases, and the interference tasks get more complex.
  • Scoring:
    • Each correctly recalled sequence earns points.
    • Bonus points are given for completing both the recall and processing parts accurately.
  • Level Progression:
    • Advanced rounds test your ability to handle longer sequences and faster switches between memory and logic tasks.
    • Accuracy and consistency determine your mastery level.
