Image Storming

See your problem through a different picture.

Image Storming

Objective

To boost creative insight and analogical thinking by connecting visual or verbal stimuli to the user’s current problem or challenge.

Problem Statement

When stuck on a creative challenge, people often think too literally or analytically. Without fresh external triggers, their minds loop within the same familiar ideas and associations.

Solution Provided

Word Balloons / Image Storming introduces random visual and verbal prompts – from words to magazine images- that provoke metaphorical and associative thinking. By exploring “How is this like my problem?”, users uncover new parallels, unexpected solutions, and conceptual breakthroughs.

The Science

Grounded in associative theory of creativity and analogy-based reasoning, this tool activates right-brain visual processing and semantic connection networks. Research shows that visual and linguistic juxtaposition enhances creativity by prompting cognitive flexibility and recontextualization – essential for innovative problem-solving.

Time Commitment

10–20 minutes per session.

Facilitation Level

Light Facilitation (ideal for workshops or small teams).

Materials Needed

Magazines, photographs, postcards, or printed art; tablet or phone with a random word generator app; notepad or whiteboard for capturing insights.
