FutureScape

See it. Shape it. Step into it.

FutureScape

Objective

To help teams co-create a vivid picture of their ideal future (3–12 months ahead) and identify the actions, milestones, and commitments needed to reach it together.

Problem Statement

Teams often jump into execution without a shared vision of what success actually looks and feels like. Without alignment on goals, risks, and responsibilities, momentum fades and confusion grows.

Solution Provided

FutureScape transforms strategic planning into a visual, collaborative journey.
By “visiting” a successful future state and mapping backwards, teams create clarity, optimism, and ownership – turning abstract goals into concrete next steps.

The Science

  • FutureScape is based on the principles of Prospective Hindsight and Future-Back Thinking, methods pioneered in cognitive and organizational psychology.
  • These techniques invite people to mentally time-travel into a successful future and then trace backward to identify the key steps that made it possible.
  • The approach draws from Gary Klein’s (2007) concept of prospective hindsight, used in strategic foresight and pre-mortem analysis.
  • It also aligns with Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider & Srivastva, 1987), which emphasizes envisioning desired outcomes to activate motivation and creativity.
  • Neuroscientific studies show that future visualization stimulates the same neural circuits as actual experience — building confidence, clarity, and goal-directed behavior.
  • In essence, by describing the future as if it has already happened, teams activate optimism, coherence, and shared accountability — transforming “what if” into “what next.”

Time Commitment

30–45 minutes per session (team of 5–10).

Facilitation Level

Lightly self-facilitated.
(Teams can run it independently with printed instructions, or a team lead can guide discussion.)

Materials Needed

  • Printed game board
  • Sticky notes – 3 colours
  • Markers
  • Timer
