The Feedback Filer

Turn workplace feedback into fuel for future growth.

The Feedback Filer

Objective

To help individuals internalize, organize, and reuse feedback effectively in future high-stakes moments.

Problem Statement

People often forget or dismiss useful feedback, especially when emotions run high. As a result, they miss opportunities to apply it when it matters most—leading to repeated mistakes, stalled growth, and shaky confidence.

Solution Provided

Feedback Filer turns receiving feedback into an active process by prompting users to “file” their feedback like a valuable asset. The desk metaphor creates a tangible mental space where feedback is stored and can be recalled when relevant, boosting learning, emotional regulation, and confidence.

The Science

This tool draws from several research-backed principles:

  • Cognitive Reappraisal:
Writing about emotional experiences (like receiving feedback) helps process and reframe them.

  • Retrieval Practice:
Recalling past learning strengthens memory and application
  • Self-Reflection & Journaling:
Regular self-reflection increases self-awareness and performance
  • Growth Mindset:
Actively tracking and revisiting feedback reinforces a belief in personal development

Time Commitment

10–15 minutes per entry; optional 5-minute recaps before key meetings or performance conversations.

Facilitation Level

Light Facilitation (ideal for self-use or in coaching/team development settings)

Materials Needed

  • Printable or digital “Feedback Filing Desk” worksheet (can also use a journal or note-taking app)
  • Pen or typing device
  • (Optional) Digital prompt reminders or calendar integration

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool

  • Set the Scene
Picture a writing desk in your mind-or clear a small physical space. This is your “Feedback Desk.” You’ll be filing important insights here.
  • Receive & Reflect
After a feedback moment (formal or informal), take a few minutes to jot down:

    • Who gave the feedback?
    • What was the feedback?
    • How did it make you feel?
    • What part of it feels useful, challenging, or worth revisiting?
  • File It
Assign the feedback to one of these drawers (you can create actual folders or tags for this):

    • Keep Doing: Positive behaviors to repeat
    • Stop Doing: Unhelpful habits to change
    • Start Doing: New behaviors or experiments to try
    • Understand More: Feedback you need to clarify
  • Tag the Trigger
Write down situations or contexts where this feedback might come in handy. (E.g., “Before presenting,” “During 1:1s,” “When I feel defensive,” etc.)
  • Revisit & Reuse
Set a reminder to return to your Feedback Desk before high-stakes conversations, reviews, or key projects. Ask yourself:

    •  “Which feedback fits this moment?”
    •  “How can I use it now?”
  • Optional Layer: Sharing
In team or coaching settings, share a piece of feedback you filed and how you plan to apply it. This reinforces use and encourages a growth culture.
