Clue Craft

A focus game for the pattern-seeking mind.

Clue Craft

Objective

Train teams (or solo players) to detect patterns, form evidence-backed hypotheses, and recommend practical solutions from mixed, noisy data.

Problem Statement

Real-world problems are messy: signal and noise sit side-by-side, and teams often rush to conclusions or miss subtle patterns. Without structured practice in sifting evidence, groups can favour plausible sounding but unsupported stories over the true cause.

Solution Provided

Clue Craft is a guided detective exercise that mixes true clues with plausible red herrings. Teams lay out all evidence, cluster related items, surface recurring patterns, and write a concise investigative Summary Sheet-then compare their reasoning to the official Case Insights. The game trains analytical rigor, collective sense-making, and clear hypothesis-driven recommendations.

The Science

Clue Craft engages the neural circuits of focus, attention to detail, and pattern recognition. The process of sorting true clues from red herrings mirrors how the prefrontal cortex and parietal networks handle selective attention and cognitive control-filtering signal from noise under limited cognitive bandwidth. By demanding precision, reflection, and inhibition of impulsive judgments, the game strengthens sustained attention, working memory, and analytical accuracycore ingredients of intelligent, detail-oriented problem-solving.

Time Commitment

20-30 mins

Facilitation Level

Facilitators are optional but helpful for group scoring, timing, and debrief.
Solo players can self-check using the sealed Case Insights file.

Materials Needed

  • Case Files (mystery scenarios). Inside each Case File you will find:
    • Clue Cards (6 true clues + 4 red herrings)
    • Case Summary Sheet (to record your hypothesis, identified patterns, and solution)
    • “Do Not Open” File (sealed insights file for after the mystery is solved)
  • A flat surface to lay out and organize the clues (a table, desk, or floor space works well).
  • Optional: tokens or markers for scoring in group play.

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool:

  • Set Up
    • Open the envelope and remove the Case File and Clue Cards.
    • Clear a flat surface to lay out your clues.
    • Write your team’s name (or player name if solo) at the top of your Summary Sheet.
  • Review the Case
    • Read the Case File aloud (if in a group).
    • Make sure everyone understands the scenario before handling the clues.
  • Uncover the Clues
    • Lay out all 10 Clue Cards face-up on the surface.
    • Note: six cards are true clues; four are subtle red herrings designed to be plausible distractions.
  • Find the Patterns
    • Begin grouping related Clue Cards together on the surface.
    • Look for repetition, shared causes, or logical connections between them.
    • Discuss (or reflect, if solo):
      • What themes are emerging?
      • Which clues reinforce each other?
      • Which might be noise?
  • The Summary Sheet
When your patterns are clear, write your detective report on the Summary

    • Summary Sheet.
    • Include the following:
      • Hypothesis – one clear sentence stating the root cause you believe explains the case.
      • Patterns Identified – a list of the major recurring themes you derived from the clues.
      • Recommended Solution – at least one practical, evidence-backed action to test.
    • The Summary Sheet is your detective’s report – it records your reasoning and recommended next steps.
  • You will also find a sealed “Do Not Open” file in the envelope. Do not open it until you (or your team) have completed the Summary Sheet.
    This file contains:

    • The official list of which cards are True Clues vs Red Herrings
    • Patterns Identified (facilitator answer key)
    • A sample Likely Solution
    • In solo mode, open this file to self-check. In group mode, the facilitator may reveal it during the debrief.
  • Group Mode: Present your Summary Sheet to other teams or the facilitator. Tokens can be awarded for accuracy, creativity, and teamwork.
  • Solo Mode: After you compare to the Case Insights file, reflect on matches and misses. Note any differences and what you learned.
