Face Pace

Train your brain to recognize faces faster, sharper, and smarter.

Face Pace

Objective

To improve facial recognition, visual discrimination, and attention to detail by challenging players to identify repeated faces under increasing speed and similarity conditions.

Problem Statement

In fast-paced environments, we often miss or misrecognize faces due to information overload or cognitive fatigue. Weak face recognition skills can impact social interaction, memory, and perceptual accuracy.

Solution Provided

Face Pace strengthens facial cognition through repetition, comparison, and time pressure. Players identify matching faces as they appear in quick succession, training visual recognition, focus, and short-term visual memory. The progressive speed and similarity of faces build perceptual sharpness and accuracy over time.

The Science

Grounded in face cognition research and selective attention theory, this game trains the fusiform face area — the brain region responsible for facial recognition. Repeated exposure under timed conditions enhances perceptual learning and visual memory encoding, improving face-processing speed and reducing false recognition errors.

Time Commitment

5–8 minutes per session (three uninterrupted rounds required).

Facilitation Level

No Facilitation (self-paced digital training).

Materials Needed

Digital access to Face Pace (desktop or tablet), keyboard (for spacebar input), internet or offline game application.

Detailed Instructions for Using the Tool

  • Starting the Game:
Press “Start Session.” You must complete all three rounds continuously to maintain your score and session validity. Interrupting the session will result in loss of scores and achievements.

  • Gameplay Mechanics:
You will see a face at the top of the screen. Faces will begin appearing one by one below. Press the spacebar whenever the face below matches the one displayed on top. As the game progresses, faces will appear faster, and some will look increasingly similar, testing both memory and precision.

  • Scoring System:

    • Points are awarded for each correctly recognized face.
    • Points are awarded for each correctly recognized face.
    • Performance Metrics per Round (2 minutes each):
      • Faces correctly recognized
      • Faces incorrectly recognized
      • Levels progressed
      • Bonus earned
      • Round score
    • Session Summary (after three rounds):
      • Total faces shown
      • Total faces correctly recognized
      • Total faces incorrectly recognized
      • Total raw score
      • Perfection bonus (for 100% accuracy)
      • Accuracy deduction (for errors)
      • Session score = (Total raw score + Bonus) × Accuracy
      • Total cumulative score
      • Levels progressed
  • Level Progression:
Each level introduces faster face presentation and higher visual similarity. Completing milestones unlocks new ranks and achievements.
